More and more print shops are using digitally printed graphics instead of cut vinyl. This is because it is more cost effective. Instead of cutting two or three different colors of vinyl for one job and layering them, you can print all the colors on the same material. This reduces the amount of vinyl needed for one job drastically, thus saving money. Now the question, Do printed graphics last as long at cut vinyl?
How long a graphic will last is definately impacted by laminates. Generally, most inks will only last about two years without lamination. With lamination however your digitally printed graphics can last up to 5 years. This dramatically increases the lifespan of your graphics. Lamination protects your graphics from degradation from uv rays, smog, and daily pollution. It also provides a barrier between your graphic and day to day wear and tear is inflicted on the laminate not the graphic itself.
Lamination comes in three different styles, matte, glossy, and textured. So you can take a graphic that is printed with a matte finish, and make it a glossy finish with laminate. You can also take a graphic that is glossy and make it matte. This is good if your sign is going to be installed where there is a glare. Yes laminating your graphic does cost more, but think about it like this. If you need to replace your graphic every two years because you didn't want to spend the extra money initially, in the long run it is going to cost you more money. If you are only using your graphic temporarily than lamination may not be necessary. It all depends on your preference.
